My Scientist

( Ivy stirring food coloring into mugs of water)

Every year Errol Hassell Elementary does a science fair. The scientists get to choose, execute and display their projects at the school for one whole day and night. On Science night families gather at the school to look at all the projects. And this year the school brought in some rescue animals that the kids could look at and some they could pet.

We got to pet an alligator!

This year Ivy was adamant about doing a project. I knew a lot of it would be on me to make it happen. Life was feeling really busy and I honestly wasn't excited about the whole thing. But I wanted her to have the experience, so I put my laziness aside. That's what us mom's do sometimes, right? So we sat down at the computer and looked at some different age appropriate possibilities.

It was the color changing flowers that got her excited!

And I liked that it was a 24 hour project that she wouldn't lose interest in. And she could do most of it herself...which is kind of the point.

All ready to put the white flowers in. Can you guess what might happen?

Ivy was so excited to see if her flowers would really change color.

After a few hours the food coloring started showing through on the flowers. But not as vibrantly as we thought it might.

Still, it was cool to see.

Look at the center of the flower and you'll notice the slightest hint of blue.

After 24 hours this is what we got.

Ivy was less than thrilled to be getting her picture taken at that moment:) See, I knew she would need a short project to do!

If you look closely, each flower has taken on the color of the water it was sitting in.

And later on at the Science Fair the colors got even more vibrant. But of course we forgot our camera.
