Sweethearts Ball

For the past couple of months Matt and his activities committee in our ward have been planning for the annual Sweethearts Ball. He had a lot of help from enthusiastic people and the night ended up being a huge success. I had seen some of the decorations that were going to be used, but when I walked into the gym my jaw dropped. I didn't take any great pictures of the decor, but it was absolutely amazing. The theme for this year was Back To The Future. All three movies were featured and everybody was invited to dress up from any of the time periods. The gym was completely transformed into different time periods. There was The Old West where chili, cornbread and sloppy joe's were being served. At the Future area there was a very futuristic looking salad bar with lots of colored lights and a fun silvery background. For the 50's era there was a Malt Shoppe set up where root beer floats were being served. People came dressed up from all the time periods and participated in different events such as skateboard races, limbo, and line dancing instruction. This activity is for youth 12 and up and their parents. This year there was a nursery for the younger kids. I laughed and laughed when Sophia, Eli and Ivy came downstairs all dressed up to go to the church. They wanted to be part of the fun! I was sure to sneak some bowls of ice cream into the kids hanging out in the nursery at the end of the night.
This is what Matt would have looked like back in the 1800's. What a hottie. I'd take him:0)

Our neighbor Laura is an amazing seamstress and has such a creative mind. She helped a ton with the decorations and invited me to wear this beautiful Old West dress. I borrowed the hat and glove from Sophia's Halloween costume. Matt works with a guy who travels with an Old West shoot em' up entertainment team. He was excited when Matt asked him if he could borrow an outfit and set him up with these duds. It was really fun to be in costume.

This was the table we sat at. I love the people in the Aloha 1st Ward. They are so warm and friendly and I enjoy every minute of getting to know them better. The guy sitting next to Matt ( Steve Eldridge) does a mean Elvis impersonation and made us laugh so hard with his talent. It's seriously one of the best impersonations I've seen. Actually, his is the only Elvis one I have seen live, but it was so good. It was great to have Elvis reincarnate for the party! Steve ended up speaking in Sacrament meeting today and I thought it was so funny when he remarked, "What happens in the Aloha 1st Ward stays in the Aloha 1st Ward!".

One of the events was a Chili Cook Off. There were 5 of us who entered and both me and Brittany tied for the Golden Spoon! I was amazed to see how different all of the chili's were. They all looked so different and though I didn't taste all of them I am sure they all tasted very different. Brittany also won a Red Spoon because hers was the spiciest. I should have used a little more cayenne! This is the second time in my life that I have won a Chili Cook Off. I made a BBQ Beef Chili and let it slow cook for two days. It was really good, but I never got any before it was gone. Oh well, I got the golden spoon!

Me showing off my prize:0)

Our friend David sang his rendition of "When I Fall In Love". He has a beautiful voice, or as Matt said in the microphone, a velvety voice. It was so fun to hear him sing! It's not very often that we get to hear members of our Ward sing songs other than church songs, so it was fun to see them let loose:0)
Below: Don't miss this video of The King Of Rock-N-Roll. It is hilarious!

What a fun activity and you have to share the recipe of your chili. You should post it on your blog.

what a great event!! Did Matt get the idea from the Farmington Ward? I know they have done them for years now. Wes told me that the very first sweetheart ball that Farmington Ward did happened when he was a priest...that tell you how long they have done them!

Great job! Thanks for sharing
