Solid As A Rock

At 3:00 in the afternoon last Wednesday Ivy came to me holding her bladder area and saying she hurt. I could tell she wasn't feeling well. The scary thing was that it came on so suddenly and she had been happy and chipper all day long up until that point. She wouldn't pee. She wouldn't eat or drink. She would only settle down if Mommy was holding her. She was so tired and wanted to take a nap, but every time she would dose off she would wake up 5 minutes later holding her bladder and whimpering. After 30 minutes of observing this I knew something was not right and called the medical advice line that our insurance company provides. They asked if she would walk, which she wouldn't because she was tired and wanted her Mommy. The nurse didn't want to chance anything so they had me take her to emergency. For 4 hours we sat there while they did some different tests to figure out her ailment. Look how sad she looks in the above picture:0( The goal was to rule out an appendicitis, but they had to rule out smaller possibilities first because the only way to really find out about an appendicitis is to do a CAT scan. Too much radiation for a small body, if it's not a necessary procedure. To begin they had me get a urine sample. This is no easy feat with a three year old, but after a glass of juice and some water Ivy finally produced what the doctor's were after. It was ruled out that she did not have a bladder infection or a urinary tract infection. Second they wanted to rule out constipation. Ivy has never had this problem before, but after a baby enema, a huge explosion all over my leg, the hospital floor and some in the toilet she chippered right up. Diagnosis: Constipation. We were free to go home. I had promised Ivy that after she pooped in the toilet I would get her some ice cream on the way home, and she did not forget my promise. So because of my stench we went through the drive thru at DQ and got a strawberry milkshake. Ivy was happy.
Here she is at the hospital starting to feel better. I could tell because she was suddenly very interested in showing me that she was three.

Rylie and her friend Nicole worked really hard and made Ivy some welcome home signs and taped candy bars to her bed. They had made her bed up really nice and had cards and teddy bears waiting for Ivy's arrival back home. It's hard to see, but on the three signs it says "Feel better Ivy!". Ivy loved it and had the candy bars for breakfast the next morning. Sweet big sister:0)

Here's Ivy just after we pulled into the garage. Notice the HUGE milkshake. For 1.00 more than the small we could get a large and share with the whole fam, so that's what we did. Ivy looks sad in this picture, but really she was feeling good. When I opened the van door and told her to smile she made this face and then said, "No, I just want to make this face". What a silly girl. I was so relieved that Ivy's only ailment was that she was plugged up. It really could have been a much worse diagnosis. For that reason I was happy to sit in emergency for 4 hours to learn that I needed to push more fluids and make sure to give her a snack of baby food prunes once in awhile. I guess this is just one of the joys of being a Mommy:0)

I'm glad that you were able to figure out what was ailing her! Poor baby girl. She's lucky to have such a supportive family to take care of her. I love how the girls decorated her bed and made get well cards!

Poor Ivy! No fun at all.

I keep a small prune-juice stash for these emergencies.

Hope she feels better.

Poor sweetie. My kids are great poopers thank goodness. Nathan drinks more than he eats and Leila loves the fiber rich food. I am so glad it wasn't somthing more serious. Isn't it amazing how wonderful the doctors are inthe ER? After spending a day there with Nate when he was a baby I was humbled and felt quite blessed so many people were caring for my baby boy. These children who can sometimes be considered the least of soceity are important human beings. The drs and nurses at the ER prove it.

Poor thing! Jake has problems witht his sometimes, mostly because I think he refuses to stop what he is doing to use the toilet. We try and get him to drink a glass of plum juice once a day or everyother day. It is a little better tasting than prune juice, but keeps him regular!
