Deschutes River

For Matt's birthday back in May I gave him a white water rafting trip. We waited to go until the weather was nice and hot. Because the Deschutes is freezing cold! We pulled up next to the river on a Tuesday night and slept in the back of our van. It was definitely an adventure! In the middle of the night we were woken up by the LOUDEST train ever. It was crazy and it sounded like the train was going to come right through our van.  But we fell back a sleep and slept until another LOUD train came whizzing by at dawn. Yeah, the tracks in Maupin, Oregon are definitely well used. Holy moly!

Our spot by the river. It was beautiful!

Our hotel for the night.

The next morning we met our group and spent the entire day rafting. I wish we had pictures, but we didn't have our water camera with us. We had a total blast! Our guide was amazing. He was a huge dare devil and had us going on some crazy class IV rapids. We went over a 6 foot waterfall and almost tipped. It was awesome! We were able to watch a few rafts come down the waterfall and saw several people fly out into the rapids. Crazy! He let us all jump out of the boat and swim down one set of rapids. "Swim to the right! Swim to the right!" our guide yelled, so we'd get ourselves into an eddy and not continue downstream. We had one lady in our raft that couldn't make it to the eddy, so our guide had to go rescue her while the rest of us waited. I kept feeling like I was being sucked back into the current, so that was a little freaky. I thought about panicking, but was able to stay calm. It's definitely true that you have to respect the water! The river was so cold, but felt amazing against the 90 degree sun. We pulled our raft over at an area called Pirates Cove and jumped off some 15 ft. rocks. It was so much fun! We covered 18 miles of river and there was never a dull moment. And the lunch that was prepared for us was really good too. Grilled chicken, fruit, tortillas, and tons of toppings. I want to go back!

I love adventuring with my hubby.
