Sun & Hail

Matt  has been on a business trip in Georgia this week. And happily things have gone smoothly. The kids have been well behaved. I even managed getting them to scouts and dance without much stress. Today Eli had a play date with D'Artagnan after school. At D'Artagnan's house. And he even got to accompany his friend to Taikwondo on a buddy pass and break his first board. What 8 year old boy wouldn't love that kind of manly experience? Of course, now Eli is in love with the idea of Taikwondo. I love the idea of it too. But the cost freaks me out. This is something we've looked into before, but never considered really seriously because it's so expensive. Like way expensive. And with four little ones to pay for we are on a budget. Maybe he'll decide soccer really is his thing or stick with his plan to swim. Much more easy on the pocketbook. But neither teaches him how to kick some bad guy booty or makes him repeat to his master such things as: I will honor my parents, sir. I will respect myself, sir. I will be faithful to my spouse, sir. No joke. A couple of months ago Eli took a 5 week Taikwondo class right after school. And these were some of the rules that they repeated back to Master O'Brien each week. The last of the rules cracked me up! It was so great. The gimmick however was that after the 5 weeks you were then told that that next Saturday you were invited to come and visit the real Taikwondo school, break a board and sign up for "real" classes.  Now, I know that this business has every right to charge the ginormous monthly dues that they do. Try 150 bucks a month plus 40-60$ for testing fees (which happens every couple of months), plus 250.00 for sparring equipment. And the list goes on. We just can't keep up with that. Sad, but true. I guess Eli won't be the next Karate Kid after all.

That was a rant. But really. With all those additional fees then what in the world is the 150.00 per month paying for?

Annoying.

Anyways, back to Matt and his business trip.

His first day in Georgia he called to say something like this: Hi babe, I'm just calling to rub something in. It's 89 degrees outside and I rented a convertible. Brat. I rubbed it back in his face that I had just returned from a walk. Had been blessed by sun, though it was cold outside, and that the hail didn't start falling until 5 minutes after I got home.

I'm sure he was way jealous.

it's ridiculous how much sports cost these days. Shule wants to get the boys playing football this year. It's going to be a 500 dollar bill to register. That doesn't include cleats. Oh gee. I wouldn't have such a hard time paying it if I knew for sure that they were going to like it. I feel like it's an expensive experience to find out if they like it!!

ha matt! you could have turned that right around on him real quick. men are easy. we can make them wish they were home in the worst of weather but since this is a family blog, i won't divulge how. you know.

taekwando IS expensive. lame. especially if he likes it. brooklyn is taking private tumbling lessons right now which is SO expensive but i really want her in this one particular gym and they only take girls at a certain level who do everything from the right side. i took brooklyn in to try out knowing what she was capable of and confident that she would make the cut but wouldn't you know it, she tumbles from the left! they agreed to take her but only under the condition that she would attend private lessons with the owners daughter until she can tumble from the left. it's almost two months and i'm dying! she can do it all from the right but they're classes are now full so she has to wait for a spot. ..... rant :)

Sheesh, the things we do for our kids! I had no idea that taekwondo (did I spell that right?) cost so much. interesting. Is is more than once a week? We have all those extra fees with Irish dance, competition fees, soft shoes, hard shoes, competition costume fee, performance costume rental, socks, wig. yes, wig. Hey, now look who's ranting? : )

I hear ya. Tyler has sensory processing disorder, and one of the things they recommend for so many reasons, is Taekwondo. I love the discipline and the life skills they teach. We just can't justify the cost, though. I hate it!

I am sure he was jealous. Oh, and about Eli, remember he does not need those fancy classes. He is the tough one. Hey, he is tougher then Scooter anyway!

Our oldest has been recruited to be on the swim team, but at $850 and tournaments around the state there is no way we can afford it. The crazy thing is there is a ton of parents that do pay for it.

I hear you about expensive sports. With 3 boys--I feel like that is where our EXTRA dollars go. We have so much sporting equipment--our garage could be nicknamed "Dick's Sporting Goods". Wish you could have come with Matt to Georgia--we're just a stones throw away from there. And today--we are headed to the beach--now are you jealous?
