What Are The Odds? And Other Random Statistics

As the date for my eye surgery nears (tomorrow morning!) I find myself getting a little bit more nervous realizing that I could be that one statistic. I know the odds are so low that anything major will go wrong, but it had caused me to wonder about the odds of many things. Almost everything we do in life has a risk involved, so for your reading pleasure and brain enlightenment, I present to you...

What Are The Odds? And Other Random Statistics
All statistics were found after doing Googles for "random statistics" and "what are the odds?", except for the Lasik statistics which came from my doctor.
Lightening strikes somewhere about 6,000 times per second on the Earth. The odds that it will get you are 1 in 3,000.
Vending Machines have killed 37 people since 1978 because of desperate people trying to shake free snacks out of them. 113 people have been reported as injured for the same thing.
Coconuts fall at an amazing 50 MPH when coming down. The odds that it will smack you and cause death is 1 in 250,000,000.
Shark attacks are rare and the odds of one attacking a human are 1 in 10,000,000.
Hole in one while golfing on a par 3. Odds: 1 in 10,000.
Billionaire- the odds of you becoming one is 1 in 1,000,000.
Car accident- the odds of getting into one are 1 in 16.
Plane crash- the odds of your plane coming down are 1 in 500,000.
Cookies- the average North American will consume 35,000 of them over their lifetime.
Dog bites- 40 people are sent to the hospital every minute because of them.
Twins- odds are 3 in 100 that you will have them.
Triplets- Odds: 1 in 8,000.
Quadruplets-Odds: 1 in 700,000.
Poisonous snake bites are rare and the odds that you will be bitten by one are 1 in 36,000,000.
Being wrongly declared dead by Social Security data entry mistake. Odds: 1 in 23,483.
Chances of seeing 20/20 or better after Lasik- 94% according to clinic study.
Infection after Lasik- odds:1 in 3,000.
Irreversible eye damage after Lasik- Odds: 1 in 15,000.
Are you enlightened?

All of your stats remind me of this book I just read titled, "Cause of Death: A Perfect Little Guide to What Kills Us." It's all about the probability of dying by various diseases, accidents and bizarre circumstances.
I hope your LASIK procedure goes flawlessly so you can enjoy the blessing of life sans glasses/contacts! I'll probably always be too frightened, but I'm certain things will go great for you. Just don't brag too much!

These are Great!! My best friend had Lasik done about 2 years ago and she swears by it. She was sooooo glad she did it! I know you will be fine! I LOVE the coconut fact!! LOVE IT!

Some of these shock me. Like the odds of Social Security declaring you dead? Crazy!

Oddly enough....... When we were in Hawaii recently, and as we were driving along, a coconut fell from a tree and landed on top of our rental car. Luckily the top was up at the time since most our driving we had the top down. It porbably would have hit me! :) Our friends that live there told us the odds of that happening were even greater than getting attacked by a shark! Crazy! By the way, love your blog! Miss you guys!

I know lots of people who have had it successfully completed, though. Come to think of it, they did seem to always be looking a little to the side. :-)Hee, hee. You'll have to be sure to post pictures of you wearing the cool post-op glasses things.

Good luck wtih the surgery! I'm sure it will go great. Thanks for all the stats. My husband Nathan actually has three people in his family who have been struck by lightening. Go figure.

Oh, awesome! I've been tagged! I'll get right on it! Good luck with your surgery tomorrow. I know it will go just fine and you'll be seeing 20/20 in no time!

I'm with Darilyn, I don't like those odds.
Good luck with the surgery, and remember to have someone help you take the drugs correctly. I've got a long story about that one.

So, you are almost twice as likely to give birth to triplets then have irreversible eye damage? I am SURE things will go perfectly for you. I am excited for you and plan to join you once I am done popping babies out. I will say a little prayer for you anyway.

Love ya, Megan

I got my degree in statistics. This is all fascinating. I think I will consume many more than 35,000 cookies in my lifetime, though.

I had lasik in 2002 and am very happy with it. I hope all goes well.

You're going to be FINE! I am so jealous you are getting lasik. I hope to someday - once I'm sure I'm done having babies.
Good luck and let us know how it all turns out.
Hugs!

I want to have my eyes done too! Hope you are recovering wonderfully!

I tend to be a morbid thinker/worrier, too! But I bet everything went GREAT and you are reading this with your new perfect 20/20 vision! Am I right??

The statistics were cool and scary. I know the plane going down is only 1 in 500,000 but that still seems pretty risky to me. I don't enjoy flying.
