The reward of helping me on Monday's is that we got to play during the rest of the week, after morning chores of course! Really my kids are not made to work all day long, but both Matt and I agree that it is important to teach our kids the value of hard work. Each morning the kids are required to get ready for the day, clean their rooms and practice piano before they can have free time. Mondays however are a bit more crazy. After the morning jobs are done I set out a to-do list that needs to be completed before we can have any play time. So, thanks to awesome kids who worked really hard today this is what we got done. In addition to bedrooms and piano practice....
Mom- laundry, cleaning of downstairs bathroom, cleaning of kitchen
Rylie- sweeping and mopping of wood floors, mowing of front and back lawns
Sophia- cleaning of play room and hallway
Eli- cleaning of sliding glass door
As a reward the kids all had some time for computer games and we got to go to Matt's brothers house tonight for dinner and dessert, where the kids got to swim and play with their cousins and Matt and I got to sit and relax and visit with Steve and Amy. I am so grateful for good kids who are so helpful and willing to do their part in our family. I feel like this "help Mom out on Monday" thing has been a positive one this summer. It has helped us to work together. It has taught my kids that when we work together things get done much more quickly, and it has helped my kids to understand the good feeling that comes from a job well done.

What a great idea. I had my kids work for me all day yesterday too. I like the idea of having that happen every week.
That is an awesome way to do that. So many kids grow up being offended that they're ever asked to do anything to help in their own lives that I think it's so awesome you're making sure they don't have that problem. They may not always like it, of course, but they get to learn that in life, you just really have to do your part.
And I totally love your background, btw. It's fantastic!
ok so do you think we could incorporate a help shauna on tuesday or wednesday day!!! HAHAHA!! ask your kids and see what they say!
I love that ideaa! I think I'll start that!
That is an awesome idea. I will have to remember that as my kids get older. You're such a great mom--it's no wonder your kids are so wonderful too.
love it! great idea! you should have posted about it at the beginning of the summer so we could have been doing it all summer. now they are getting ready to go back to school. so, what do you do during the school year???
Can you send your crew over to my house on Tuesdays?
We have "magic hour" from 5:00-6:00 pm in my house where we all do chores and get dinner ready. It didn't take very long for my kids to figure out it wasn't all that "magic."
What GREAT kids! They accomplished A LOT!
I agree with you it is important to teach kids how to work hard. They will value this lesson when they are older. My dad used to say, "A family that works together...stays together." Of course...praying is good, too ;)
I"m glad your kids "get it". Mine still don't. Great plan, i love it.
Can I say that as a teacher, I respect and love, and appreciate what you are teaching your children. You would be amazed at how children treat me and our, yes our - not my, classroom. Children have such a lack of respect for others, not just their elders, but all those around them. They also do not understand the value of hard work. They expect to be entertained just as they are with tv, with the click of a button. I will get off my soap box now. For all you kids past, current, and future teachers, I thank you.
I LOVE this idea!!! It's really true how much faster things get done when everyone helps and it's a lot more fun too!
I hope you all had fun in Utah last week! We LOVED seeing all of you when we were in town. My boys had a great time with your kids. Hopefully it won't be as long until we see you again this time. I'm so glad we were able to be there for Sophie's special day.
